StorySign is designed to enhance accessibility to literature for deaf children by translating children's books into sign language, aiding in their reading comprehension.
With an estimated 32 million deaf children worldwide facing challenges in reading acquisition, the struggle often lies in the difficulty of associating printed words with their corresponding concepts. StorySign aims to address this issue by providing a solution.
HOW DOES STORYSIGN WORK?
- Ensure you possess a physical copy of the book for the StorySign app to scan.
- STEP 1 - Download the app and select your desired book from the StorySign Library.
- STEP 2 - Position your smartphone over the text on the book's page, prompting the friendly signing avatar, Star, to sign out the story while simultaneously highlighting the printed words.
The StorySign app is free to use and supports translation into 15 different sign languages including American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL), Australian Sign Language (Auslan), among others. Notable languages also covered are German Sign Language (DSG), Italian Sign Language (LSI), and Brazilian Sign language (LSB).
Currently, StorySign includes a selection of five popular children's books for each sign language region, offering beloved titles such as those from Eric Hill's renowned Spot series.
This innovative tool has been painstakingly developed in collaboration with the European Union of the Deaf, local associations, deaf schools, and in partnership with Penguin Books using cherished classic children's stories.
